This sunflower-like perennial tends to move north and south to avoid the heat of the mid day sun. Like Cup Plant and Prairie Dock, Compass Plant has very large leaves and makes its stature known in the prairie world.
Birds favor the seed heads and its a magnet for butterflies. This plant prefers full sun and very dry soil. It is very drought tolerant.
How To Plant Compass Plant Seeds:
Direct sow seeds into prepared soil in late fall once soil temps are below 50 degrees (usually mid to late November). Can also be planted in winter during natural freeze / thaw cycles and early spring. Plant shallow, no deeper than 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep and lightly rake to work seed in. Plant in full sun. Will take three growing seasons to fully establish.
