Regreen™ is the premier product developed by Rainier Seeds for cover or nurse crop and erosion control applications where native seed is being used. It is a cross between annual wheat and perennial wheat grass. Regreen is a good choice for erosion control for native seed mixes because it does not compete with the native species during the establishment phase.
Under good growing conditions, perhaps half of the population will survive into the second year and a lesser number into the third growing season. Under more harsh conditions, survival should be expected to be less.
Both parents contribute some desirable traits. The wheat parent provides a large seed which is rapid-germinating for ease of stand establishment. The wheatgrass parent contributes excellent foliar disease tolerance and the ability to withstand long periods of drought.
Regreen™ is a sterile hybrid and will not set viable seed in the absence of outside wheat pollen.
Works with all types of soil moisture and is very drought tolerant.
This product typically germinates and grows when soil temperatures are above 45 degrees Fahrenheit.
Each site is individual based on characteristics and objectives. The application rate for Regreen™ seed is typically 20 to 40 pounds per acre.
How To Plant Regreen™ Seeds:
Regreen™ is a great complement to your native seed mix. It does like to be planted a little deeper than the native seed though. Regreen™ should be planted 1 to 2 inches deep in most situations. Most native seed should be planted no deeper than 1/4 inch. There are two ways to approach a seeding with Regreen™ and your native seed mix.
1. Install them at the same time. In this situation, you will want to sow the Regreen™ first. This way you can plant it 1-2 inches deep. After the Regreen ™ is installed, sow the native seed over the top and lightly work it into the soil no deeper than 1/4 inch.
2. Install the Regreen™ in advance of native seed material. This situation in common in instances when you need to get some plant growth during the summer months to help reduce erosion control prior to a dormant seeding later in the year. In this case, you will likely need to mow the Regreen™ down and rake it off the site prior to your native seed installation. The key to sowing native seeds is seed to soil contact. In some instances, the Regreen™ growth may be sparse enough that mowing is not necessary.
