Grey-Headed Coneflower is one of our favorite species at OPN Seed. We love it so much, it's in our logo!

You'll find this native perennial wildflower in a lot of our seed mixes for a variety of reasons.

Spectacular mid-summer blooms provide a wash of color in mass planting and garden beds.

In autumn, its seed head can be crushed in hand to reveal a wonderful aromatic fragrance.

A number of seed-eating birds consume the seeds when the plant matures in late September and into October. Leave this species standing tall all winter long and you'll often see birds perched munching on seeds!

This plant is a long lived perennial with deep roots that allow the plant to thrive even in severe drought.

How To Plant Grey-Headed Coneflower Seeds:

Direct sow seeds into prepared soil in late fall once soil temps are below 50 degrees (usually mid to late November). Can also be planted in winter during natural freeze/thaw cycles and early spring. Plant shallow, no deeper than 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep and lightly rake to work seed in. Plant in partial shade to full sun. Can take three growing seasons to fully establish.
