Showy Milkweed (Asclepias speciosa) adds character and interest to a wide range of garden settings and more importantly, attracts Monarch butterflies which need Milkweed spp. to complete their life cycle.
Can work well in smaller garden settings, since it does not spread as much as Common Milkweed. This plant typically reaches heights of two to five feet and prefers full sun, but can tolerate fluctuating moisture levels in the soil. Clusters of pink to purple flowers attract butterflies, pollinators and more!
How To Plant Showy Milkweed Seeds:
Direct sow seeds into prepared soil in late fall once soil temps are below 50 degrees (usually mid to late November). Can also be planted in winter during natural / freeze thaw cycles and early spring. Plant shallow, no deeper than 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep and lightly rake to work seed in. Plant in full sun ( at least 6 hours of sunlight a day). Can take 3 growing seasons to fully establish.
