Wild Bergamot is a member of the mint family of plants. It is also known as Bee Balm.

Its flowers and foliage have a slight mint-like fragrance and you'll often smell it before you see it!

In pre-settlement times, the species was probably found primarily on prairies. But unlike most prairie plants which seldom grow by themselves in non-prairie areas, Wild Bergamot grows easily in all open field habitats. Can also grow well in garden beds.

This mid-summer stunner blooms alongside species like Purple Coneflower, Ox Eye Sunflower and Grey-headed Coneflower

How To Plant Wild Bergamot Seeds:

Direct sow seeds into prepared soil in late fall once soil temps are below 50 degrees (usually mid to late November). Can also be planted in winter during natural freeze / thaw cycles and early spring. Plant shallow, no deeper than 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep and lightly rake to work seed in. Plant in full sun to partial shade. Can take three growing seasons to fully establish.
